The City Artists Corps Showcase at Queens Theatre
How To Make Hell Cozy
October 23, 1:30 PM
Type of event: Theatre performance
When the only relief from week-long tropical storms is earthquakes, fire-nadoes and long spells of dangerous air quality, hope can be hard to come by. In this queer, gothic adaptation of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper, native New Yorker Veronica struggles with loneliness and climate anxiety as she shelters inside a government-run apartment that she thinks has been empty since she arrived. Unbeknownst to Veronica, her every move is being watched by a menacing figure lurking from within the wallpaper itself. Anything but Realism Theatre reimagines this classic story in this innovative piece driven by its scenic design.
Meet the artists
ANYTHING BUT REALISM THEATRE
Anything but Realism Theatre is a group of theatre artists who create and produce new works by centering design as the generative engine for storytelling. This approach stems from a collective love for the sensory experiences of theatrical performance and a desire to inspire a paradigm shift in the American Theatre that decentralizes the playwright as the primary source of creativity worthy of recognition and resources. Our work springs from the abstract, expressionistic, wordless inspirations that make us feel magic when we experience them with our senses, and the text comes after.
