Directed by Sabrina Peck
New York Premiere
Merchant on Venice is a witty, sharp and ambitious work based on Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice offering biting humor and a fresh perspective on intra-communal hostilities.
Kurup has set his story in Culver City, Calif., where hatred and intolerence among Hindus and Muslims have grown to a boiling point leavened by humor.
With music, modern verse written in present-day South Asian/American pop lingo, blank verse and present-day pop references, the play explores how the preponderance of power in one sector of a community can marginalize a minority and provoke reactionary and retributive responses.
